Halifax County, North Carolina Court Minutes, Volume I, 1784-1787

The text contains the oldest court minutes ofr Halifax County, North Carolina.  Halifax has suffered a loss of many of its records, reason unknown.  

Court minutes, by their nature, have to be transcribed rather than summed up in an abstract.  The spelling is as the Clerk wrote it.  There are several indexes.  The Clerk wrote in paragraphs.  A unique number was assigned to each paragraph and indexed accordingly.  

As dull as they are, court minutes give access to the entirety of a county's records.  They actually serve as a key and index to the other county records and, in many cases, contain information that occurs nowhere else.
