A Farm Boy Who Became a Master Builder and a Much-Loved Family Man

Charles Melville Ailes was born December 15, 1880 to William Elvy Ailes and Martha Jane Carrick Ailes at their 172-acre farm in Beach Bottom Township, Pennsylvania. This is his story, working on the farm, building projects for friends and family and his life as a foreman for Bartlett-Hayward Company in the demanding work of building natural gas holders at many locations across the United States. An appendix includes the natural gas holders built by Bartlett-Hayward between 1905 and 1944.

The region around the farm was later named Ailston. The story of the Ailes is recounted in the recently published The Ailes Family of Ailston, Pennsylvania which covers the background of the Ailes and Carrick families, some stories of life on the farm, and a summary of the lives and names of descendants of these families.
