Morgan County is in eastern Tennessee and has a rather complex genealogy. It was created in 1817 from Roane County which was established in 1801 from Knox and Blount counties; Blount County had been formed from Knox County in 1795.
The extant federal censuses of Morgan County begin in 1830. The 1850 census was the first one to list all the inhabitants by name, with age, sex, color, and occupation of all males over 15. It also noted the approximate value of real estate owned and gave the state or country of birth.
In the transcription which follows all lthe essential genealogical data is given. In addition illiterate persons over 21 years of age are n oted, students are marked with an "s," and various other data recorded by the enumerator, such as "married within the year," has been included.
There were 581 households in the county with inhabitants.
