The author's dominant purpose was to compile the story of the settlement and growth of Bristol County, Massachusetts, in as complete and continuous a narrative as possible, thus giving the reader easy access to information otherwise scattered across numerous books and libraries. The history of the county covers the years from 1637 to 1898. The cities of Taunton, New Bedford, and Fall River are given lengthy, individualized coverage. Subjects covered, to varying degrees for these three cities, include early settlement, industries, wars, schools, newspapers, and education, among others. A gazetteer of the county's towns is also included. Over four hundred pages are devoted to biographical sketches.
