This "is a history, not of English Kings or English Conquests, but of the English People…of the nation itself." Mr. Green spent less time and space on conventional figures of military and political history in order to find a place for the missionary, the poet, the printer, the merchant, or the philosopher. He believed that constitutional progress is the result of social development and change. He has given greater attention to the religious, intellectual and industrial progress of the nation than to the personal adventures of kings and nobles or the pomp and intrigues of the court. Mr. Green included hundreds of illustrations and detailed notes for each illustration, providing additional historical references. Also included are chronological annals of English history, genealogical tables and a subject, place and fullname index.
