"The Commissary General was responsible for the supervision of Confederate prisoners of war and political prisoners confined in Federal prisons, for correspondence and other business relating to Federal prisoners of war confined in the South, for the maintenance of camps for paroled Federal prisoners of war and supervision of parolees, and for some matters relating to the exchange of Federal and Confederate prisoners of war. Later the Office was assigned duties in connection with the settlement of claims of all prisoners of war." The records in this inventory are for the period 1861-80, with some records as late as 1905. The appendix includes a list of Miscellaneous Rolls, Returns, and Reports, 1861-65.
