CD: Preliminary Inventory of the Textual Records of Naval Districts and Shore Establishments: Record Group 181

$15.95

"The Navy Department from its beginning in 1798 has created and maintained navy yards and other types of shore establishments to perform services for the fleet. Since 1903 the United States, with its Territories and island possessions, has been divided into several naval districts, each of which is charged with the administration of certain shore establishments within its geographic limits. Commandants of naval districts are responsible to the Chief of Naval Operations. This record group (for the period 1783-1948) includes records of the naval districts and various shore establishments under their jurisdiction, such as naval shipyards (formerly called Navy yards), naval stations, naval bases, and naval air installations."
