Gerald and Essie Mae Hill intended to write a book about his experiences in World War II. He wrote 225 letters to his family during this period, and he took more than 250 photographs. In order to tell the story, they carefully labeled and saved his photographs and the letters that they wrote to each other. However, after the war ended in Europe, Gerald Hill returned to America, and he was faced with the urgent need to find a job and a new home for his family. What he saw in the last two months of the war would be a difficult story to tell. Some of his friends were killed as they stood near him in battles in Germany. Others in his regiment, who he had known and helped, were killed, wounded, or captured. As he visited hospitals filled with horribly wounded men, he wondered: Would it have been better if some of them had died? He rarely spoke about the war after he returned to civilian life. This book is based on the letters and photographs that were discovered more than seventy years after the war ended.
