Approximately 13,500 Palatines reached England in 1709. Some were forced to become swineherds, day laborers, enlisted in the British army or apprenticed; and some were sent to the new world. Many were sent back to Germany. “On 7 July 1709, the Queen heard the proposal from the Council of Ireland that a number of Palatines be sent there to strengthen the Protestant cause, to help develop agriculture, and to advance the linen industry.” In September 1709, 2,971 Palatines landed in Dublin; by January 1910, the total number of Palatines in Ireland was 3,073. “As in Rotterdam and London, their reception in Ireland was most unfriendly.”

This work chronicles the lives of these Palatines and their descendants. Families are arranged alphabetically by surname. The amount of genealogical information for each family varies greatly. These sketches typically include information for family members and often their descendants, some include the emigrant ancestor or other family origins, spelling variants, and/or other relevant details. A lengthy Introduction provides a detailed history. Vintage photographs, a bibliography, and an every-name index add to the value of this work.
