The Other Side of the Coin. Autobiography, Revised Edition - Hans J. Kunert. A unique tale of one man's journey from Breslau to El Paso and beyond… This gripping first-hand account of World War II is told from the perspective of a native German who was caught up in the destructiveness of the Nazi regime in 1930s Germany. Hans Kunert was born in Breslau, East Germany (now Wroclaw, Poland) in 1922 and grew up in the chaotic years that followed World War I. He watched the rise of Adolf Hitler from a front row seat-living under Hitler's dictatorship, and serving with the Labor Company and the German Army in Russia. Then, being severely wounded and discharged, he was forced to flee the Russian Army. Experiencing narrow escapes from death and disaster, Kunert's life continued through homelessness and hardships until he was able to leave West Germany to start a new life in America. Penniless, he arrived in New York with his wife and two children. The Kunert family's pursuit of the American dream was often difficult, but they persisted. Their dream was finally realized in El Paso, Texas, where Hans served as an engineer with the U.S. State Department from 1961-1984. (2002), 2008, 5½x8½, paper, index, 282 pp.
