In 1864, the California Legislature granted the County Courts the criminal jurisdiction of the Courts of Sessions which it had abolished: 1.) to inquire, by the intervention of a Grand Jury, of all public offences committed or triable in their respective counties, and 2.) to try and determine all indictments found therein, for all public offences, except treason, misprision of treason, murder, and manslaughter. A guide to the criminal cases of the Court of Sessions of Sonoma County from 1850 through 1863 has previously been published. This guide continues the series by presenting the criminal cases of the County Court of Sonoma County from 1864 through 1879 when the County Court itself was abolished.
This publication comprises six sections: three tables of County Court criminal cases (Old Series, New Series, and unnumbered), pre-1864 County Court criminal case appeals, County Court terms (1864-1879), and an all-name index. Nearly 700 criminal cases are presented in this guide, and over 5,500 names are indexed.
