This book contains a list of marriage records compiled from various original documents pertaining to Alleghany County, which was formed in 1822 from parts of Botetourt, Bath and Monroe Counties, Virginia. It includes 5,649 names of those involved, 113 are ministers. These pages offer a careful abstraction of the marriages recorded in the first marriage register of Alleghany County. Photostats of the original records have been included for comparison and reference. The book is grouped into four parts, which include: Alleghany County, Virginia: Minister Marriage Returns Book: 1822–1855; Alleghany County, Virginia: Marriage Register Book (1): 1854–1872; List of Ministers for Part (1), List of Ministers for Part (2); Name and Date Index: Part (1), Name and Date Index: Part (2). Two indices list names and any important dates associated with these individuals. To aid in finding remarriages and children who may be missed by regular searches, the “index has been alphabetized by both a widow’s married name and her maiden name when known. A child’s name may have a related name in ( ) if the mother has another last name.” A list of abbreviations, a list of geographic locations, a map and references augment the text.
