The majority of this volume is concerned with the response of the commissioners to various aspects of the Articles of Confederation for the United Colonies, and with disputes between the individual colonies over trade terms, deeds, land usage and Indian affairs. Detailed transcriptions of letters and addresses between the commissioners and the Indian chiefs of the region illustrate the tense relations between these parties and the need for constant negotiation and communication to maintain peace.
