A number of years ago the Flagon and Trencher Society, a patriotic and hereditary society of descendants of colonial tavern keepers, decided to compile a record of men and women who were tavern keepers, ordinary keepers, inn keepers, inn holders, hotel keepers, public house keepers, and tippling house keepers in the American colonies prior to 4 Jul 1776. The author supplemented the tavern keepers' names with additional information, in many cases including the years of birth, death, and marriage, names of spouses, and residences of the tavern keepers. There are about thirteen hundred tavern keepers listed herein, but when counting their spouses, who worked with them in the business, the number doubles.
Descendants should consider joining the Flagon and Trencher Society.
