The book begins with a history of the local Nipmuck Indians and includes a copy of the deed for the purchase of the town from them, followed by a list of citizens who received property in the division of land and information about early events of note. Other valuable lists include census polls, military enlistments, agricultural data, and government positions, select-men, and constables. The remaining chapters cover a variety of diverse subjects including the town's war record, ecclesiastical and educational history, official and statistical history, and old houses and buildings. Genealogies include character sketches, professional profiles and death notices of 79 of the oldest local families, among them Aldrich, Baker, Child, Clark, Fisk, Goddard, Goodale, Harrington, Leland, Miles, Robbins, Stone, Wheeler, Whitney and Wood. Over 50 illustrations, including maps, woodcuts, and portraits enhance work.
