Harford County, Maryland Inventories, 1774-1804

An inventory is a useful research tool for genealogists and historians. This book contains abstracts of the inventories of Harford County, Maryland from 1774, when the county government was created following its separation from Baltimore County by Act of Assembly in 1773, through 1804 when the next of kin were no longer included in the inventories. The inventories herein were gleaned from the books in the Register of Wills Office in the courthouse in Bel Air, Maryland, and were supplemented with inventories filed in the Prerogative Court of Maryland. These early inventory books at the Harford County Register of Wills Office have since been transferred to the Maryland State Archives.

Abstracts are arranged alphabetically by surname of the deceased and include the date of the inventory, valuation, the names of the executor or executrix if the person died testate (with a will) or the administrator or administratrix if the person died intestate (without a will), and next of kin (blood relatives and in-laws) if listed. Additional items are sometimes given, such as “List of Sales” or “List of Desperate Debts.” A full-name index completes this work.
