Petitions for Name Changes in New York City, 1848-1899

National Genealogical Society Special Publication Number 53. Taken from records found in the Hall of Records in New York City the author has abstracted 890 petitions for name changes between the years 1848 and 1849. The petitioner was usually aided by an attorney, while the petitioner who was a minor was represented by a "next friend", frequently a parent or relative.
