Northampton County, Virginia 1850 Census

This transcription was made from a microfilm copy of the original census obtained from the National Archives in Washington D.C.

Northampton County, Virginia, along with its sister county Accomack is located on  small pensulia between the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic ocean.  These two counties are known as Virginia's Eastern Shore or just simply called The Shore.

The first census was taken in February 1624 with 76 men, women and children then living on the Shore.  The next census was taken again in February 1625 with only 51 then living on the shore.  Northampton County, Virginia, has records dating back almost to the first settlements which began on 7 January 1632/3 and are said to be the oldest continuous county records in the United States.  

The census transcription provides the family number, surname of the head of the household, age, sex, and birthplace.
