Preliminary Inventory of the Records of the Chiefs of Arms: Record Group 177

$10.00

The term "Chiefs of Arms" refers to the Chief of Field Artillery, the Chief of Coast Artillery, the Chief of Cavalry, and the Chief of Infantry. The Artillery Corps contains two branches: the Coastal Artillery and the Field Artillery. This inventory describes the materials in Record Group 177, Records of the Chiefs of Arms. It includes records of the Office of the Chief of Field Artillery, the Office of the Chief of Cavalry, and the Office of the Chief of Infantry. This work was compiled primarily for internal use in the National Archives; and, as its title indicates, it is intended to be only a "preliminary" description of the records to which it relates. "Many of the series are incomplete and fragmentary because the documents were separated, before transfer to the National Archives, from other War Department materials, particularly the records of the Army Ground Forces."
