Washington County [Maryland] Church Records of the 18th Century, 1768-1800 - F. Edward Wright. This is a collection of vital records taken from German Lutheran and Reformed churches at Hagerstown, Salem (Cearfoss Pike), Funkstown, St. Paul's near Clearspring, Jacob's near Leitersburg, and Williamsport. Excerpts from Vestry minutes of the Episcopal Church of St. John's at Hagerstown are also included. In using German church records of Maryland one must realize that the Lutheran and Reformed congregations frequently shared the same church building at some time in their histories. These were called union churches. Although each denomination was distinct and independent of the other, members frequently used the minister of the other denomination; sometimes records of the two congregations were combined. These baptism and marriage records are grouped chronologically by church and are easily accessed by use of the full name index.
