The Funeral and Remembrances of the Life of Bishop George Foster Pierce
Bishop George F. Pierce, whose estate, "Sunshine," lies in the environs within the Culverton Parish. In fact, the railroad passed through the Pierce property, and the Bishop was so well-known that the president of the railroad instructed the engineer to stop the train when he observed the Bishop standing by the tracks, so that he could be picked up on his own property and not have to go to the railroad station. He was senior Bishop of the Methodist-Episcopal Church, South, during the last part of his episcopate. Indeed, his term as Bishop covered the terrible years of the War Between the States.
Bishop Pierce is the first Bishop in Methodism, either North or South, to journey overland from the east to west coast. He, his wife, and little daughter went by stagecoach.
