Georgia Land Lotteries: This is the most famous example in United States history. Between 1805 and 1833, the state of Georgia held eight major land lotteries to distribute roughly 75% of its public territory.
Governments used this system instead of selling land to the highest bidder or wealthy speculators. It aimed to rapidly populate frontiers, encourage westward migration, and build agrarian economies.
