The Very Reverend H. Clavreul, V.G. was assigned by Right Reverend Mgr. W. J. Slocum in July and August 1864 to go into the Confederate Prison known as Andersonville in Georgia. His task was to be of comfort to the Federal prisoners confined in the stockade. He survived the most difficult time there and kept a listing of more than 350 prisoners who died in the two months that he was there. Most of these prisoners were of foreign birth, primarily Irish. It is of interest to note that a large majority of these soldiers were NOT listed in the official record of those who died in service. They were not all Catholic and some were converted and baptized by the priest during his time there.
