Mercer County, Kentucky, located about in the middle of the state, was one of the nine counties erected by the legislature of Virginia before Kentucky became a state. It was established in 1785 and named in honor of General Hugh Mercer, a Revolutionary War hero.
This volume of the history and biographical sketches of the county are taken from two sources, History of Kentucky by Lewis Collins in 1882 and KENTUCKY: A History of the State by W. H. Perrin, J. H. Battle and G. C. Kniffin in 1885. The biographical sketches were submitted by the families themselves and therefore, they are more accurate than most sources.
