Jefferson County, Tennessee is one of the state's older counties, established 11 June 1792 by William Blount when Governor of the Territory South of the Ohio River. It was formed from parts of Greene and Hawkins Counties. This first book of guardians reflects the method of handling orphaned children in this day and time. The records had to go before the courts for approval and the guardians were appointed by the County Court in regular sessions.
