Meigs County, located in southeastern Tennessee was named for Colonel Return Jonathan Meigs who was appointed by President George Washington as the agent of the Federal Government to the Cherokee Indians in 1801. This WPA record of the guardian settlements and reports to the county court are important with regard to the orphaned and widowed children in the county.
