Rutherford County, located in middle Tennessee was created in 1803 from parts of Davidson, Williamson and Wilson counties. It was named in honor of Griffith Rutherford (1721-1805) of North Carolina, he was a colonial legislator and General during the American Revolution. After the war he moved to middle Tennessee and served as the President of the Council of the South Territory prior to Tennessee Statehood in 1796. These tax listings give the names of the owner of the land, acreage, polls both free white and slaves.
