Located on the east side of the Tennessee River and north of the Hiwassee River, all in lower eastern Tennessee, was created in 1836 with land taken from Rhea County on the west side of the Tennessee River. It was named for Colonel Return Jonathan Meigs, the first and major agent to the Cherokee. All agents prior to Meigs would have all of the tribes in the south under their care. Meigs, a true friend of the Cherokee, worked hard to bring them into the white culture with schools, craftsmen and leaders of all sorts to help guide these natives along the way.
