Williamson County, located in middle Tennessee, has a long history. Created in 1799, it was named for Hugh Williamson of North Carolina. In lieu of the 1800 Federal Census for Tennessee, the tax listing is the next best listing of the citizens of a county. Here we have the 1800 and 1801 tax listing with the added 1805 list that only names white polls and black polls. We realize that every tax list will miss someone in the county, especially those who do not own land or have a business. Many of the ˜share croppers" would not have been counted or the very poor who would not pay a poll tax, school tax or any other tax. These lists are as good as we can get.
