Grayson County, located in the Mountain Empire region of Virginia, is one of the older counties in the section. This 1840 census gives only the names of the head of the households, but there is so much more to be found here. The residents in the household are given by sex/age ranges, freed colored are show in the same way. Then on page two of the census is found the occupations, the name and age of those pensioners from the American Revolution or the War of 1812 as well as some personal data like blindness, deafness, etc. Then last but not least, if the head of the household or someone in that house is a teacher, the type of school and the number of scholars are shown.
