Grayson County, Virginia Marriage Book 1, 1793-1852

$2000

The records in this book are an exact copy of the pages of the first Marriage Book for Grayson County, Virginia.  The first thing you notice is that an official will have all of their marriages for a period together.  This tells us that the officials, usually ministers, would come into theCourt House once or twice a year and record the listing of the marriages they performed during the time given.  The next official would then come in and put their listing following in order.  These records were not taken on a chronological basis.  The second thing to notice is the spelling of the names.  At the time period shown, there was not standardization of the spelling of names and basically there still is not that level of understanding.  In many cases, the official spelled the name as the person pronounced it and then the official wrote this down as best they could on the license and court record.

These records are given as a research tool.
