Summers County was created by an act of the West Virginia General Assembly on February 27, 1871 from parts of Fayette, Greenbrier, Mercer and Monroe counties. It was named in honor of George W. Summers (1804-1868). These early death records are arranged as in the court house, i.e. by years. The give the name of the deceased, date of death, where it occurred cause, age, and who reported. Sometimes, the occupation and name of spouse is given. This is a great source of information for the individuals.
