This book is intended as a quick reference for lands that eventually ended up in the German Empire. The German Empire was picked because that is the time when Germany was at its largest except during Hitler's Third Reich of conquering half of Europe. It was unified for the first time under one government, one ruler, one name. Actually, this was the first time that the name Germany could be used to indicate a country in Europe Before 1871 there were literally hundreds of small lands. They spoke a similar language and had similar customs, but they were not united as one unit. This book deals with history of the land and does not deal with the population.
