This reference chart provides a complete guide to the organization of Virginia's county government structure since the colony's founding. For each new county, the chart shows all of the contributing parent counties in an easy-to-read fashion. The chart also includes the regions of West Virginia and Kentucky up to the time when they became separate states. (An enlarged version of this formation chart is currently in use by the Virginia State Library, Archives Division, in its Genealogical Research Room.)
