One of the most important references for North Carolina genealogical research is the multi-volume "Hathaway's Register", first published in 1900-1903. Unfortunately, like so many of the books of the time, its lack of an index precludes its effective utilization by genealogists. David Hamrick has provided in these three volumes a full and concise index to the "Register", including both married and maiden names whenever given. They will doubtless "open the door" and provide new leads for many families of North Carolina (and Virginia) extraction.
