From the Introduction: This book is also called: “Russell County Circuit Court Order Book, Common Law, #4, 1850-1871”, filmed Oct ’73. “The Superior Court of Law existed from 1808 to 1831 when it was replaced by the Circuit Superior Court of Law and Chancery. In 1850, the Circuit Superior Court of Law and Chancery was replaced by the Circuit Court”. The CLOB [Common Law Order Book] for Russell Co. is contained in two films, Vol. 1: 1809-1824 and Vol. 2, 1824-1837 – film #2057376 and with Common Law Order Book Vol. 4 skipping to 1850-1871; and vol. 5, 1872-1886; CLOB #3 seems to be curiously missing; the vols. 4 and 5 are on film 2057377. This book also contains occasional cases from the Court of Appeals in Richmond, VA. Russell County CLOB 4 essentially follows the same form and content as CLOBs 1 & 2. Russell CLOB 4 begins at Court Monday, Apr 15th. 1850 with the convening of a grand jury of inquest and ends 601 pages hence on 09 Nov 1871 with the Debt cause of Jas. H. Wood vs. Chas. A. Smith & A. R. Smith. It appears that two page numbers were not used by the clerks: pp. 201 and 223.
