This title contains:
- Part I - 1830 Sullivan County, Tennessee Census; Transcription in order by census page number as recorded by the census enumerator;
- Part II - 1840 Sullivan County, Tennessee Census; Transcription in order by census page number as recorded by the census enumerator;
- Part III - 1830-1840 Sullivan County, Tennessee Censuses (Combined Index) - Parts I and II combined in full into one alpha listing first by surname, then by given name, then by year (Important note: The census page numbers as presented in the Combined Index refer to the transcribed census page numbers in Parts I and II, and not the page numbers at the bottom of the pages in this book.)
How to use this book: The Combined Index (Part III) is not just an index but is complete in itself… It is a combined alphabetical listing by surname, given name, and year, and this index includes all of the transcribed information for any one given ancestor for both the 1830 and 1840. This will allow you to readily find in one quick glance, for example, all of the SMITHs who were living in Sullivan County, Tennessee in 1830 and 1840. If you use the census page numbers as given in the Combined Index to refer to the respective census page numbers in Parts I and II, this will allow you to see the data in the same order as recorded by the census enumerators on the original schedules. In other words, locating your ancestor in Parts I and Parts II might provide you with additional clues as to who might have been living next door to or in the same neighborhood as your ancestors in 1830 and 1840. Prior to the 1850 Federal Population Schedules, all census schedules contained only the name of the head of household, All members of the household (including the head of house) were then enumerated by age categories. The 1830 and 1840 Federal Censuses provided age categories for the enumerators. (Please note that, due to columnar space on paper, the number of slaves and free colored persons appear in this transcription without categorizations by ages).
