The early German immigrants followed their dreams and their beliefs. They came to these shores with their friends, neighbors, and families. After their arrival, they built and attended German churches, established German schools, and maintained a sense of German community.
This book reproduced here is an example of a text prepared for the immigrant to teach himself English. The format of the book will also help present-day Americans learn basic German. This is a wonderful and awe-inspiring example of the efforts which the immigrant put forth to adjust to life in a new and strange land. The sentences, paragraphs, and stories are printed in German and English.
This reprint is being printed as found, complete with the discoloration that occurs with time. Those who have trouble with the Gothic Print should take time to try to learn it, since many documents which were produced in Germany and in United States are in Gothic print.
