Prior to 1784, all probate matters in the colony and later state of South Carolina were heard and recorded in the courts of Charleston, South Carolina. This 3 volume series indexes the surviving probate records from the Colonial and Revolutionary periods. Volume 1 contains an index to Inventories from 1746 to 1785. Volume 2 contains items from the Journal of the Court of Ordinary 1771-1775, abstracts of Letters of Administration for South Carolina and Charleston District 1775-1785, abstracts of Letters of Administration with the Will Annexed from Volume K, 1778-1821, including many previously unknown probate records from the Colonial and Revolutionary period. Volume 3 contains items from the Journal of the Court of Ordinary, 1746-1771. The Journal of the Court of Ordinary contains all kinds of probate matters: proving wills, administration of estates, guardians appointed, and some marriage licenses.
