Hawkins County was formed in 1787 from Sullivan County, Tennessee which in turn was formed from Washington County, and prior to that western part of Washington District, North Carolina. This book contains abstracts of 1,208 various warrants, surveys and grants issued by North Carolina for land in Hawkins County, Tennessee. There are also 54 items that are not grants but do hold genealogical interest. It was customary for the surveyor to describe the location of the property on some stream or head waters of some stream, or on some mountain giving great detail as to its boundaries and names of neighbors. Other data to be gleaned from these abstracts: name of grant recipient, name of person selling grant, acreage, warrant numbers and dates of issue along with other useful information. As one will see from this book, warrants from Sullivan County, Washington County, Military Bounty warrants, Greene County, and service right warrants were used to obtain grants in Hawkins County. Sometimes entries were dated before Hawkins County was formed so entries or warrants may mention earlier counties, but land would have been Hawkins County when the survey was made.
