In 1790, western Massachusetts was a crossroads for New England families heading west into New York or north into Vermont. The transient nature of these families, especially during the post-Revolutionary War years, presents certain genealogical challenges. This fifth and final volume of sketches produced for the "Western Massachusetts Families in 1790" Study Project contains details on seventy-seven heads of household—along with lists of their children—who were enumerated in the 1790 census in what are now Berkshire, Hampden, Hampshire, and Franklin Counties. Sketches were contributed by NEHGS members and skillfully edited by the late Helen Schatvet Ullmann.
This volume includes entries for the following surnames: Abell, Bacon, Badger, Bassett, Berry, Bird, Briggs, Buck, Burgess, Butler, Cadwell, Chamberlin, Church, Cleveland, Cole, Cook, Cooley, Cowles, Crosby, Dibble, Doud, Drake, Dwight, Eastman, Eldridge, Ellis, Fairfield, Ferry, Forward, Fuller, Graham, Griggs, Haskell, Haskins, Hawks, Hayward, Hemenway, Hitchcock, Hurlbut, Keet, Kelton, Knapp, Lawrence, Merrill, Miller, Payne, Porter, Rawson, Root, Sears, Smith, Snow, Spaford, Streator, Train, Watkins, Weller, Wheeler, Whitcomb, Whiting, Williams.
